Holiday Mental Health Tips

Even in the best of times, the holidays can be stressful. That's why it's even more important this year to take care of your mind this holiday season. Here are some tips:

  • Eat a balanced diet. The holidays come with delicious sweet treats, but it is important to balance those with healthy, fresh food for your brain and body. 
  • Stick to a routine. Creating a daily routine can help you organize plans and work through your to-do list without getting overwhelmed. No task is too small! Include things that you do on a daily basis so that you can cross them off and start your accomplishments early. 
  • Add physical activity to your day. Whether it’s a long run or walking your dog, exercise can make you feel relaxed and clear your head. If it’s too cold to get outside, find a fun workout video to follow along to or practice yoga right in your living room.
  • Get a good night's sleep. The recommended 7-8 hours a night can improve mood, reduce stress and make you more focused. If you’re having trouble falling asleep try setting a bedtime routine and put away electronics an hour or so before bed. 
  • Practice mindfulness and meditation. These have both been proven to reduce stress, control anxiety and promote emotional health. Make sure to find a comfortable position and a space where you feel like you can relax. If you’re new to mindfulness and meditation, here are a few resources to help you get started: Headspace, Calm, or find guided videos on YouTube. 
  • Stay connected. Even when social distancing, it's important to stay connected. Find time to chat with loved ones, or reach out and help others when you can. Using video chatting apps like Skype, Zoom and Facetime can help give you a face to face experience.
